I'd say it's "unfortunate" that getting myself into a confusing Git state was neither caused by having committed my changes accidentally, nor resolved by `git reset --hard`.

Not on this occasion... but I hadn't checked until you suggested it!
There's nothing for it but to go and redo the last hour of changes while they're still painfully fresh in my head and alas not my branch's HEAD...
