That particular pattern is an instant hard “nope!” from me on any tool. An action I can’t see without a mouse simply doesn’t exist.
I'm trying to wean myself off Vim this decade, so I'm prepared to forgive VS Code for a while on the basis that maybe this isn't something I should care about too much... but yes; deep down, I agree with you.

I've been using Sublime Text for about five or six years now and I'm still absolutely thrilled with it. If you're attempting Vim-weaning, Sublime still has the best and most comprehensive Vim mode I've ever seen in a non-Vim/Emacs editor.

meanwhile i’ll be working on making vscode contain 1/10th the majesty of emacs (for example i think remote ssh connections could be better integrated) so hopefully we can avoid making these kinds of concessions via concerted effort to produce open source infrastructure
