Can’t speak for every part of the community, but there were a lot of objections raised in regards to people’s first impressions of Discord. Specifically, for many people in the US, the first time they heard of it was in a televised Richard Spenser interview after Charlottesville.
I'm not sure what the context was, but I'm loathe to unwittingly grant anyone the power to undermine a service by means of their patronage... But my thirty seconds of googling was already taking me to sites I didn't want to visit, so I don't know the full story.

I agree. I think the concern was that people would never take the time to google past their first impressions and learn the truth, and thus a part of the community would be needlessly alienated.
