Riot, you say? A new chat client in my life sounds like exactly what I was crying out for... ;) But seriously, I have little-enough attachment (in terms of other users) to Discord that I could give it a try.

In Riot’s case it might be actually worth it despite the n+1 problem, seeing how well it tries to integrate into other platforms and provide a nice set of features while being free and open

It doesn't sound like it from the Mozilla announcement, as they're completely shutting down their IRC server in a couple of months. That might force someone to write one, but I'm not sure how welcome that would be, given how hard it is to migrate people at the best of times.
