Riot, you say? A new chat client in my life sounds like exactly what I was crying out for... ;) But seriously, I have little-enough attachment (in terms of other users) to Discord that I could give it a try.

I would stick with Gitter, it has a great GitHub integration and it’s more accessible than Discord. They fixed the mobile web issues. I wish the UI was better but I can live with it.

I’ll still continue to use Discord to chat with certain circles because the chat experience is much better than on Gitter. I already have like 12 chat apps on my phone so it doesn’t bother me much to keep both Discord and Gitter.

I tried Sameroom, https://sameroom.io  to bridge across chat clients. It worked but not smooth enough to keep it up. It was a while ago though, so maybe better now.

Can’t speak for every part of the community, but there were a lot of objections raised in regards to people’s first impressions of Discord. Specifically, for many people in the US, the first time they heard of it was in a televised Richard Spenser interview after Charlottesville.

I'm not sure what the context was, but I'm loathe to unwittingly grant anyone the power to undermine a service by means of their patronage... But my thirty seconds of googling was already taking me to sites I didn't want to visit, so I don't know the full story.
