Sounds like progress. It always seemed to me (a layperson when it comes to physics, so this is purely ignorant meta-analysis) like one of those things where the continued lack of evidence suggested we should go back and review the initial assumptions...

In summary it sounds like because they thought supernovae brightness was unaffected by the age of galaxies they saw that supernovae were not as bright over time as they would expect and deduced it was being pushed away by mysterious unknown forces, or dark energy.
