Update: the food came, and it was really good. So I'll be sure to leave a generous tip.

Well, I don't want them to feel bad about the whole waiting-for-the-menu incident, and everything went smoothly after that. So, if the check ever arrives I'll make sure I leave a little extra.

Were they waiting for a dinner date to arrive? Did you communicate that you wanted a table for one without any language misunderstandings? Is it common there to dine alone? Somethings there are some fascinating cultural difference chain reactions causing these situations.

I did ask for "stół dla jeden" (table for one, or my approximation of it) when I arrived. When the same waitress brought the menu, she apologised profusely in English, saying she thought I was waiting for someone, so I think she misheard. Dining alone isn't common, generally… ;)

She probably wasn't 100% on understanding "table for one" as it's against custom. If we add your, I'm sure, phlegmatic efforts to appear completely fine with the situation I can understant her preferring the awkwardness rather than risk offence by assuming a dashing gent was alone

I would have expected the offer of a drink while I waited, though. There was definitely some mistake made which would have been resolved under normal circumstances by the diner politely requesting the menu after a few minutes. But time was on my side and I was having none of it!

Yes... otherwise you've maybe just discovered the reason for the misunderstanding!
