She probably wasn't 100% on understanding "table for one" as it's against custom.If we add your, I'm sure, phlegmatic efforts to appear completely fine with the situation I can understant her preferring the awkwardness rather than risk offence by assuming a dashing gent was alone
I would have expected the offer of a drink while I waited, though. There was definitely some mistake made which would have been resolved under normal circumstances by the diner politely requesting the menu after a few minutes. But time was on my side and I was having none of it!
