Well, I don't want them to feel bad about the whole waiting-for-the-menu incident, and everything went smoothly after that. So, if the check ever arrives I'll make sure I leave a little extra.

Were they waiting for a dinner date to arrive? Did you communicate that you wanted a table for one without any language misunderstandings? Is it common there to dine alone? Somethings there are some fascinating cultural difference chain reactions causing these situations.

I did ask for "stół dla jeden" (table for one, or my approximation of it) when I arrived. When the same waitress brought the menu, she apologised profusely in English, saying she thought I was waiting for someone, so I think she misheard. Dining alone isn't common, generally… ;)

I mean, I *was* waiting for someone: her. Anyway, I told her I just thought she was busy, and it was fine; I didn't mind at all. The free cake at the end suggests she didn't believe me, so now I have that to feel bad about...
