I went to a restaurant (alone) and the staff showed me to a table right in the middle of the room. My seat was facing the direction of where the waiting staff wait. I started reading. 95 minutes later, they brought me the menu. This is a record for me, at least.

You‘re the most British person I‘ve ever encountered.

To be fair, I was quite happy reading. I hope the staff know this and don't feel bad.

If this had happened in Britain, though, the staff would have been equally embarrassed about the situation, and a standoff would have continued until closing time, which would have been later than usual, if ever.

In Italy, after at most 10-15 minutes, we would have gone “sorry, can I have the menu please?” loudly and to any waiter walking within a 5 meter radius. Of course even if the waiter was already busy serving food to other people! :)

Yes, I really didn't want any embarrassment like that, so I avoided eye-contact.
