I've been building Linux kernels for 15 years (probably more than a hundred). And it's the most time-consuming and opaque part of the setup process. The likely consequence of this claim is that people reading it will feel worse when the inevitable failure get it working happens.

If something is difficult, like building a working Linux kernel, (or understanding type systems or distributed computing), then we should be proportionately frank about it. Making the dissenting claim bolder doesn't make it any less false. It's basically just "lying harder".

I haven’t read this page in a looong time - are you contemplating Gentoo?

-
I'm not contemplating learning anything else at this stage! I've been using it continuously for a long time now...

It looks like they are going to provide precompiled kernels some day https://blogs.gentoo.org/mgorny/2019/12/19/a-distribution-kernel-for-gentoo/ …

I dropped it after Uni, could not afford wasting half of my time working on my computer compiling stuff. It was fun and educational though.

I found that going with the defaults and then being overly generous about what you enable was the most successful, but aggravating path.
-
I normally use the defaults, but if I have more time I tend to start from a more minimal configuration and add things when necessary.
