If I'm read the situation correctly, and knowing who @scala_the is, I think that they feel like the original tweet—which labels a member of the community "toxic" after they make a joke (and even includes a winking emoji)—creates unnecessary ill-feeling in the community.
Can you elaborate on what you mean in the second paragraph, please? I'm not sure I get it...

All else being equal, simpler is better. So, if one wants to propose a complex/more abstract solution, which takes effort to use, the "burden of proof" should lie on the proponent. If a simple joke causes doubt on the technique, perhaps one may not have a strong case for it.

Although there is some confusion... good abstractions are meant to simplify, by separating the essence of a problem away from its less relevant concrete details. Perhaps the words "intuitive" or "concrete" could help.
