I have a friend who worked for the BBC. Getting pronunciations right is a thing they consciously do. Maybe ppl should add that to their checklist before giving a presentation. Clearly Jon is mindful of it. OTOH, people can't even pronounce "tuple" or "GIF" correctly.
I think it's just a vague interest in foreign languages, coupled with the visceral feeling of Britishness that it would rip my heart in two with embarrassment to know that I had mispronounced something as fundamental to a person at their name.
