Oh, you mean people copy/paste the code, and the IDE just adds the "obvious" imports? This totally explains why *I* don't get it!

This is what happens when IDEs become pervasive. Honestly, and without elitism, languages where the most influential users work exclusively in text editors rather than IDEs are better and more accessible languages in and of themselves.

+100 I get why people like them. But for me, personally, they've always seemed a smell. I want to write code that doesn't drive one toward and IDE.

Usually a Java class that is part of the JDK has a unique or at least preferred package. But to know that Date means http://java.util.Date and not http://java.sql.Date makes it at least unnecessarily difficult to comprehend.
