I'm pretty sure Jon more than compensates to the society by his community building efforts and other contributions. I'd actually hate it if he were flying less.
And if you try to analyse the impact of individual responsibility on reducing emissions, it's really unclear what difference it makes at all, unless you have a massive shift in the behaviour of a lot of people.

We can hope for that, and I would support it, but I can't help but feel a little depressed that my own personal contributions to that goal would be effectively zero, and that we need a much more significant step-change. And the sooner we realise that, the better.

I'm sorry if that sounds more like the "we're damned whatever we do" answer you didn't want, but I'm reasonably sure we're damned until things get so bad that it forces a more dramatic change in human behaviour.
