I'm staying in a motel in Utah tonight. On the table is an upturned, white, approximately three-litre, plastic bowl, beneath which is a transparent bag, all atop a beige plastic tray which is screwed (with a single screw) to the table. It can rotate. But what does it all mean?

There's a chance it's unrelated to being in Utah, but I thought I'd mention it...pic.twitter.com/d9I4IDJspl

That's an ice bucket. The plastic bag is for you to line the bucket before putting the ice in as hotel ice buckets are known to be very dirty.https://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/1058668/hotel-holidays-2019-ice-bucket-cleaner …

Europeans like me aren't so into ice* as Americans, so it didn't even cross my mind... * Don't get me wrong: ice in a drink is refreshing and great, but having a machine just down the corridor which makes the stuff seems extravagant. Why not a lemon tree in every room, too?

Ice machines are hardly extravagant. They exist in nearly all Americans home freezers as well. Do you not find it convenient to have ice around? Our ice machine is indispensible in our home.

They just don't exist much in Europe. We put water into plastic trays and freeze it if we want ice... and everything seems to work out adequately.
