Perhaps one of the best things a programmer can do to reduce global warming is reduce the compute costs of highly used libraries. Even small savings of libraries used in data engineering and ML could make a huge difference on a global scale. But, I suppose Jevons disagrees.

I tried to convince myself that Magnolia's order-of-magnitude compile-time improvements for generic derivation offset the carbon I used flying around the world promoting it... but I don't buy it. I did take a lot of flights that year.
