I'm staying in a motel in Utah tonight. On the table is an upturned, white, approximately three-litre, plastic bowl, beneath which is a transparent bag, all atop a beige plastic tray which is screwed (with a single screw) to the table. It can rotate. But what does it all mean?

There's a chance it's unrelated to being in Utah, but I thought I'd mention it...pic.twitter.com/d9I4IDJspl

My current theory is that the white pot and bag are a trash can which the cleaner didn't finish with. But the tray... I mean, trays are better when they're portable.

I bet the bowl and bag are for getting ice from the ice machine in the hotel (or on your floor). The bag is probably so you feel that your ice won't get dirty from the "dirty" bowl. Not sure about the tray; catch any stray water? ... but don't steal the tray!

Yep, there's a growing consensus that it's an ice-bucket! In the morning, I'll check if there's an ice machine outside. Given the other compromises this place has made on luxuries, I'm a bit surprised they thought of ice...

Sounds like you’ve got your own little ice-bucket challenge
