Meanwhile D and Nim bootstrap from source in 2 and 4 minutes respectively ..
I don't know anything about them... is the "bootstrapping" just building a source tree once, or is it a multiphase sequence of compilers, each one building the next?

D downloads a binary and builds itself with that. Nim provides the C it compiles to so the initial Nim compiler builds with GCC and that is used to build the source. This accounts for the time diff.
