As #Gitter alternative, Discord is a very bad choice. Yet another proprietary app, hostile to alternative clients, backed by venture capital w/ an unclear business model, what could possibly go wrong.

I don't think picking a proprietary solution is a mistake per se. Just look at GitHub: it's not open source and yet we all heavily use it to do OSS development. As a maintainer, I prefer to an IM solution that works and that everyone uses instead of a "niche" OSS alternative...
I actually share @alexelcu's concerns about Discord, from a business perspective. But if, one day, it just went away, I think we would all quite quickly reorganise and regroup somewhere else, without much hassle.

For the record, I share those concerns too. I just think it won't be a big deal. Knowing that big communities such as Rust use Discord officially also makes me feel better; we won't be alone if that happens
