      There are 100 prisoners, numbered 1-100. The prisoners' numbers are written onto 100 cards, put randomly into 100 envelopes numbered 1-100. They can't communicate, but are invited, one by one, to open 50 envelopes. If any prisoner fails to find his number, they all get killed.

      Can they re-arrange the envelopes? Do they see/know which numbers were in which envelopes?

      They can see which numbers are in which envelopes, but they're not permitted to change the envelopes in any way which would communicate anything to the next prisoner.

      I should clarify: Each prisoner can see which numbers are in the fifty envelopes each is allowed to open. (And they therefore know the other fifty numbers are distributed among the other fifty envelopes.)

          Based on any form of independent drawing by the people the probability will be close to zero. This means that some property of the game has to be used. I have an idea, but proving that it works is kinda hard... University times are a couple of years back -.-
