I don't often do it, but that particular tweet hit a nerve. I'm trying to help to build a friendly community, and I think that calling out unkind behavior when I see it is an important part of that. My options for discouraging the original tweeter (and his friends) are limited...

I think you need to consider scale here. In this case, you increased the audience of this particular tweet, which would have only been visible in a reply in a thread, by a factor of several hundred at least (the tweeter having only 35 followers)

I'm not sure making bad behavior on a small scale much more visible is a good way to discourage it. It may well have the opposite effect (feeding the trolls), in addition to creating a perception of conflict, that more mild-mannered people will want to avoid
