Q: is it fair to consider diversity before technical merit in hiring? A: throw FalseDichotomyException(); /* technical competence is needed but not sufficient to be a good problem solver; bringing a diverse mindset & background, empathy and grit is as — if not more — important */

How is that a false dichotomy? The phrasing isn’t implying they are mutually exclusive or even a trade off. And you, correctly in my view, answer within the premise of the question: yes it is fair. We consider many axes. Next question.

Optimizing ANYTHING comes at the expense of others: it is rare to find something optimal on N-axes. That’s fine. We make trade-offs all the time. We are selecting for the best teams not the best individuals. And “best” is very hard to evaluate in any case.

I like this "hiring for the team, not the individual" phrasing. I've previously tried to describe this (in the context of a conference program) as "selecting for the greatest marginal benefit to the entire team/program".
