This is like the time(s! plural!) where I've gotten into the Shengen zone without actually showing my passport. They just… let me walk in. I was sure I'd be arrested on the way back out again.

Well, it is of course, but in @djspiewak's case I think it's just that flights into Schengen from certain countries are sometimes treated as if they're domestic. Particularly if arriving from UK which has stricter immigration controls than Schengen.
