I remember certain fragments of learning: being told about "magic 'e'", or particular words I got wrong (e.g. palace/place) or later on, words whose meaning I got wrong (e.g. reluctant, which I thought meant the opposite). I remember just ignoring words I didn't know, aged ~10.

But I don't remember the stage my niece (4½) is at right now, where she sounds the letters individually before joining them up into a single word, sometimes incorrectly, of course.
