Is Polish a gateway drug to Russian? Asking for a friend.

For the starters, Russian uses Cyrillic alphabet ;) Apart from a few similarly-sounding words Poles understand very little Russian and vice-versa.
Well, Cyrillic took me two hours to learn, and it maps much better onto Polish than English. But I already see lots of Poolish words which I recognise from my (very very small!) Russian vocabulary...

Russian is more regular and easier to pronounce (more vowels, less "shch" sounds). So maybe the other way around?
