For the starters, Russian uses Cyrillic alphabet ;) Apart from a few similarly-sounding words Poles understand very little Russian and vice-versa.

Well, Cyrillic took me two hours to learn, and it maps much better onto Polish than English. But I already see lots of Poolish words which I recognise from my (very very small!) Russian vocabulary...

I'm starting to wonder if I'm misusing the phrase "gateway drug"... ;) I never thought they were the same, just that learning Polish grammar and vocabulary might be an enabler for more readily understanding Russian, coming from a Germanic & romance linguistic background.

Słowacki, białoruski, te języki są dużo bliższe do polskiego niż rosyjski. Nawet jak czytam na głos słowa po ukraińsku, to prędzej to zrozumiem, niż rosyjski. No i jeszcze chorwacki, pomijając kruh i hvala ;-)

I guess this might come from popular belief in "the West" that Russia represents and is the center of "the Slavic World". Which is perceived false these days in many Slavic regions.
