This is a great example of why comments should be used sparingly. Comments are not necessarily truthful. Comments are not checked by the compiler. Comments are not even tested. Nothing breaks when you don't maintain comments. Code without comments has none of these problems.https://twitter.com/tpolecat/status/1095469227903832064 …

I think comments are very important, but you need to be disciplined and keep an eye on them in code reviews. Also, in the same way you can write code such that it will tend to remain correct, you can also write comments in such a way that they tend to remain true.

Actually, as I wrote that I was wondering whether "vagueness" is actually a desirable quality in comments. Precision can be fragile...

I use comments to express frustration. What about that?

It's acceptable, but expressing that same frustration in code is better.

That is called refactoring. I think comments “a is shit so we need to do x now but ideally we get rid of problem with a in a way we would be able to do y instead” are sometimes very important orientation signs. Though I would rather avoid that

I was mainly being facetious. ;) But I basically agree.

In nutshell it’s simply naive to optimize comments for permanence. Comments should optimize for a change.

That's a nice way of looking at it.
