Yeah, this always gets me in Slovak, too. But Slovaks are very good at distinguishing an English “no” from a Slovak one (and always seem surprised that I would confuse the two).

Czech too
It's sth like "yeah, I see", an informal confirmation in the middle of a conversation. But the pronunciation is different then English "no". -

This was the case in not-so-long-ago English, too. "Yeah" was how you agreed in the negative.
