I would love to see more eng leaders execute on & write about how to: - surface the true costs of build vs buy in an ongoing, systematic way - streamline procurement & remove perverse incentives - reward senior eng for successful outsourcing of tools, tricky vendor integrationshttps://twitter.com/AlexWilsonV1/status/1092196453131472897 …

It is PHENOMENAL how much engineering time procurement wastes. It gets worse when factoring other staff costs (HR, etc). @commuterjoy has a great write-up of how to try and reframe this problem by making internal engineering “buy vs build” too: http://matt.chadburn.co.uk/notes/teams-as-services.html …

... like seriously, this is green field territory for a hungry young(1) engineering manager or director who is itching to make a name for themselves. i will happily counsel you, braindump everything i know, and assist you in any way i can. we *need* this. (1) (metaphorically)

Agree, we're doing a great job in Scala being library-focused rather than framework focused. Everyone is free to innovate and it really shows.

There's value in inflexibility though (_insert Runar's talk title_), which is why some enterprises tend to prefer frameworks.

I've never really thought about it this way until now, but could our concept of a "framework" be better served by a "curation of independent libraries" (maybe with a little glue)?

Frameworks can (and are) built in libraries, but, no, the point of a framework is limiting the different ways of doing the same thing, which libraries don't hold as high a value.
