Oh, I wasn't talking about you, here. I was talking about "some people"...

Anyway, the critique was really just trying to moderate my own suggestion that I'm special in some way that makes me more reasonable, logical and willing to admit I'm wrong. I think it's probably more of an aspiration than a reality...

sounds to me like Jon thinks he's special and therefore needs to explain his point well.

I mean the critique of my own point, in case that wasn't clear. If it seems like I'm putting a lot of time into explaining these points, it's because I care about avoiding being misinterpreted. And I'm sure I won't always succeed.

everyone understands your points. they are not hard to understand or novel or unique to you. we just disagree with them because they are morally objectively wrong. you can't lecture your way out of that.

As with most things, I think he has some good points. It would be helpful for offenders to go out of their way to show they are unoffensive, but at the same time, the offended need to understand that they do not exclusively own the domain nor the way it should be described.

The problem is offended/offender is so subjective. In a public space we can't prevent someone talk because you argue to be offended even more in a situation where you just talk about programming.

I don't think people should be under pressure to present themselves as not offensive. That's just Fascism Lite, it still has the same result, and the arguments just need to be adjusted a little: "you were trolling" -> "you didn't make sure we knew you weren't trolling". Bad idea.

This is why I deliberately presented it in terms of incentive, rather than punishment. I believe in people's right to be offensive, just as I believe in others' rights to judge them by their behavior, their empathy, and what that implies about their conviction for their point.
