Again, this is stretching the moral equivalence, but I would not consider someone selfish for choosing the easier option of riding in their segregated seat because, say, they need to get the bus to work to earn money to feed their family.

human dignity is essentially worth a thousand times more than a cup of soup. people can be lulled into thinking otherwise, but everyone wakes up to this inevitably.

even /admitting/ the possibility that someone might do the convenient, subservient thing in face of injustice is an act of dehumanizing them.

I think that that sort of thinking moves everyone closer to disagreement. It doesn't make things more pleasant for the majority of people who just want a place they can ask questions and get friendly answers. They are the majority I'm thinking most about.

I don't have children, but if I did, I wouldn't recommend to them that they get into a fight with a larger, meaner bully just because they've suffered an injustice. Yet I still don't think it's inconsistent that I admire someone who would.
