yeah no there's a dozen people for every seat who would jump at the chance. You're making this out like it's some undesirable job that no one wants to do. That just isn't true.
I think it's too easy to get bad moderators, though. When I was talking about "trust", I meant the trust of the community being moderated, not my own trust. I can't control other people's trust, but I'm aware that it's a relevant factor.

that's why you stop making it a state and start making it a process, which you then optimize. people unfit for moderation duty will self identify quickly enough.

But I think there's a further problem which is that there's widespread disagreement over who is a good moderator. In the Gitter forums, there was a lot of support for and against @fpmortals's banning.
