I think that for most people, the ban doesn't affect them nearly as much as it affects you, so they're less likely to care. But then they read the follow-up tweet-storm, and they get a "bad feeling" (that's all it takes) and probably just feel the moderators were right all along.
It's fast and loose reasoning, which doesn't stand up to critique, but there is no critique, so it doesn't matter. They get on with their lives, and you end up looking worse. Everyone loses.
Who do you mean by "the wookie"? But my advice, if you reduce it to something so simplistic it's borderline false*, to a) the moderators is, "let the person you want to ban win" and, b) everyone else is "let the moderators win".
