It doesn't give you many options for dialogue if you don't know who they are... but I think that's just one more reason why it's not worth the effort of trying to make a stand, especially in this domain where it's *so easy* to be misinterpreted. You can be right and still lose.
I think that for most people, the ban doesn't affect them nearly as much as it affects you, so they're less likely to care. But then they read the follow-up tweet-storm, and they get a "bad feeling" (that's all it takes) and probably just feel the moderators were right all along.
It's fast and loose reasoning, which doesn't stand up to critique, but there is no critique, so it doesn't matter. They get on with their lives, and you end up looking worse. Everyone loses.
