last month I had some strange kernel/acpitable/microcode/usb-c errors, WTH level. I updated my laptop firmware and everything magically worked again. Work hypothesis: all cpu related attack mitigations forced half-tested, not fully backward compatible patchs leading to chaos
I managed to boot with an older kernel, which gives me hope it's a software fault. A couple of things like my trackpad aren't working any more, but I can live without that. At some point I'll attempt to build a new kernel. It needed updating, anyway...

it really looks like the kind of things I experienced. Are you using a source/rolling base distro? If so, it really can be an impedance mismatch between firmware/kernel/microcode/acpitable

I'm using Gentoo, and it wouldn't surprise me... I upgraded a few packages since the previous restart. It probably didn't help that I combined that with an unclean shutdown (power loss)...

it could be, since MS and Apple choose to decrease their integration quality to linux level, but with a lot more constraints... (and well, I know it was ironic and all, and I use a linux desktop exclusivelu since 2004, so perhaps I'm not the best interlocutor on that...)
