last month I had some strange kernel/acpitable/microcode/usb-c errors, WTH level. I updated my laptop firmware and everything magically worked again. Work hypothesis: all cpu related attack mitigations forced half-tested, not fully backward compatible patchs leading to chaos

I managed to boot with an older kernel, which gives me hope it's a software fault. A couple of things like my trackpad aren't working any more, but I can live without that. At some point I'll attempt to build a new kernel. It needed updating, anyway...
