Showing the direction of travel (north, south, east, west, [anti]clockwise, etc) on metro platforms instead of the final station(s) on the line could do wonders for usability. Compass points are universal; I wouldn't need to consult a map while navigating underground corridors.

Oh and in Manhattan they show "uptown" and "downtown".
I get more confused than I ought to about downtown and uptown. I mean, is the town on a hill or in a valley?

Downtown is towards the southern end of the island. Uptown is... the other way.
