This is awesome! We just messing with regex in Scala yesterday, struggling with the limitations of its extraction capabilities. Can't wait for optional groups!
I feel like not enough people know about https://github.com/propensive/kaleidoscope/ … yet! It'll give you better syntax and more typesafety if you're doing any work with regular expressions, however mundane! For example, request.path match { case r"/blog/$article@([^/])/?" => showBlog(article) }

We also have something similar to that in: https://github.com/frugalmechanic/fm-http/blob/f83e646999ff6fd7d158ec612460d64b2eac9bea/src/main/scala/fm/http/server/RouteMatchers.scala … (more strongly typed against HTTP-route matching though)

It also allows for unapplying strongly typed things (like a CatalogId) or what not
