I'm saying, don't get depressed that 1% of 1% of the population are showing themselves to be awful human beings. An overreaction is also bad: it makes those few look powerful in having provoked it, and they don't deserve that. Any response has to be proportionate.

There are already very real consequences and harm being done to everyone not looking sufficiently German. Staying silent is not a measured response.

Also, it's not 1% of 1%. We're seeing large-scale effects of Facebook-driven radicalisation of entire cities spilling over onto the street. There is research on this.

But it doesn't change my opinion that Germany is a country which opened itself up to much more immigration than any other country in Europe, and has accommodated the migrants, on the whole, admirably. I think it will come to be seen as the greatest legacy of Germany's leadership.

Accepting immigrants at a rate higher than can be properly integrated in society does harm. European countries do not have the diversity of the US and its experience with integrating immigrants. And when you don't listen to society's fears, Trump, Brexit and Le Pen happen.

if media were explaining the history of civilization grow is immigration, that immigration is a chance, that people asking for asylum are not immigrants but victims, and 24/7 as mass media are doing for the opposite narrative, Overton window would be elsewhere

We have plenty of experience in Romania w/ doing a poor job of integrating ethnic groups, maybe we'll have a drink sometimes. Populism in Europe is on the rise and if you think the problem is mass media, you're imo barking at the wrong tree.
