I can say without evidence but with great confidence that @propensive has written something that depends on this behavior.
I experimented with this sort of thing a couple of years ago as part of a hugely hacky HTML library that was part of Rapture, but it had implicits and subtyping (with complex variance) in the mix, but the abstraction was leaky, and overloading screwed up inference.
But I recently rewrote that library using Dynamic, checked with macros. Not my preferred combination of features, but it became easier for me to reason about, and I'm pretty happy with it now.
