How many instances of Left/Right can it create and garbage-collect per second? Given the exceptions are likely to be... exceptional... my instinct would be that the exception-based approach would be much faster.

you could also mixin NoStackTrace to further reduce the perf penalty since the generic stack trace is probably not very useful to spot the error as opposed to providing the path to the failed field.

Please show me a parser which is able to deserialize and bind a realistic message in less than 111ns to be competitive with no stack trace exception throwing and catching. But for general case you are right, exception should be exceptional: https://shipilev.net/blog/2014/exceptional-performance/ …
