Your name is a personal thing, given at birth. You're not required to share it with others. The name YOU tell others is the name to which you will answer. If someone doesn't understand, well, they may have trouble getting you attention!

I teach ESL to Asian students. I always ask what they prefer. And I warn them I will try to pronounce their names and it may take time to get it right. To not be offended. Sometimes they are. But I'd rather try than assume.

I cannot fathom how rude people are. Your name is the name you share with me. If you tell me your name is BLANK, that's all I have to know. It's non of my business what's on your birth certificate, or what your family calls you.

It's so true, it's a huge deal among Jews. One of the biggest transitions Jewish people make when they decide to take on more Jewish observance is when they decide to have people start calling them by that Hebrew name they never used publicly before.

Why do people think it’s okay to ask people that question? We should respect someone when they say, “Call me ___. “ Another question that angers me is “Where are you REALLY from?”

I prefer anybody who is not going to understand me if I speak only Korean at them to use my white-passing name. I don't wanna waste my time teaching people who don't need my Asian name on how to use it. I'm not google translate to be repeating how to read my name all tbe time.
