The D614G (not 614S) mutation produces an extra Elastase cleavage site on the spike protein. The delC allele (rare in E Asians) permits 614G easier entry into Europeans and North Americans.

If you insist on strong evidence for functional differences to define “strains”, you must also insist on strong evidence for a *lack* of functional differences to say there are /not/ multiple “strains”. It cuts both ways. The title of your blog post is too strident.

This whole argument reminds me a little of the asymptomatic transmission issue as it unfolded. Not to say this will go the same way, but until we have clinical/epidemiological data aligned with the sequence data I’m keeping an open mind
