Pretty much every virologist has been saying this from the start. Unfortunately it will take a lot longer to convince the general public that these +ve tests aren’t reinfections. It doesn’t make as dramatic a headline!

Unfortunately, the public and media people do not understand what viruses are, how they're constructed, or molecular biology. So, trying to explain that the COVID-19 test only detects a couple of strings of RNA base pairs that code for nuclear capsid proteins is near impossible.

New data: Electron Microscopy of viral particles deep in the lungs of a patient doctors thought had cleared the virus. This is a persistent virus. Not acute. ID docs in the USA have said this for weeks. This virus lingers in protected sites.https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3082200/coronavirus-may-lurk-deep-lungs-after-patients-recover-study?utm_source=Twitter …

Not reinfection. Patients don't clear the original infection. Virus is persistent.

Yea but the original reports were not referencing test results. People in hospitals seemingly recovered from it, and then were readmitted
-
People may have been released too quickly. The article doesn't say anything about people being readmitted.

Promising (and not surprising), but has this been published in a peer-reviewed journal yet? If not, should we treat this news as likely but not yet proven? What does this mean for the CDC preferred protocol of 2 negative PCR tests 24 h apart before return to work?

persistence of genetic material for long time after clearance of viremia is proven (peer reviewed) in other cases as well
