Totally understand your point. But in dx this is also dictated by certifications, validations and SOPs... switching, or implementation of new tests, not straightforward w/o "breaking rules"...

In Canada we still use LDTs a lot in Clincial labs, especially public health labs. And that’s why we are ready to test widely. Current issue up here isn’t running out of commercial kits - but manufacturers are running low on polymerase, primers slow to arrive, also NP-swabs low.

For tests to be used in a clinical setting (for diagnosing) it's not feasible to go without a kit. The short answer: CLIA regulations require extensive QC and validation of test systems that are used on patients. We can start testing faster if pre approved reagents are used.

This feels like a mild swipe at a "kit generation" of scientists. I'll defend kits. They save time and mental bandwidth, allowing scientists to collect the abundance and variety of data needed for modern pubs. The fundamentals are always online and anyone can make buffers.

Trying to treat the current crisis as charitably as possible, might it be that kits are necessary in clinical settings because ther precision, accuracy, and other analytical parameters are well-characterized?
