How is it that the general coronavirus line here is listed as 3 hrs though the SARS-related viruses are 3-4 days. I have not heard of there being that much variation in the stability of different CoVs. Does anybody know where the 3 hr data comes from?

The surface tested, temperature, humidity, titer, amount of protein in the suspension, the kinds of cells the virus was grown, the kind of particle (w/ w/o envelope) in all will affect stability. So, are the caveats to a table like this a mile long? Or just a few feet long?

Amen to that! I must have tried to explain the nuances a thousand times already this week. Everyone is looking for a nice neat rule that covers every scenario, and it may not be as easy as that.

What does 'how long persists' mean here? Removal to detection limit? It's not as if 100% of the virus is infectious until some magical time point and then completely removed. Decay rate and viral load (as well as test conditions) much more informative, esp. for risk management!

From a quick look, it seems like "persistence" = "detectable" here, so plenty of caveats indeed. But still a useful reminder that (most) viruses are seriously robust, even outside of their host :-)

This has the potential to be misleading. No indication of initial loading (N0), logs kill, etc. Also, surface type, temperature and relative humidity (water activity) are all known influencers.
