I've had that reviewer... :( I wish reviewers would remember that there are people with feelings receiving these reviews and that many of those people are trainees.

As a postdoc I had a paper that included an acknowledgment to a PhD student in the lab that had recently passed on. One of the reviewers commented that the work did not do the student justice. I think of that every time I submit or review manuscripts

The first time I wrote a peer review, my PI counseled me to be as kind as I'd want my own reviews to be. Which reminded me of a professor pulling over a colleague to express disbelief that I included a particular figure on my undergrad poster.
