Thankfully, many other great journals serve as a better alternative for those wanting to publish somewhere more in tune with their scientific beliefs. Technical quality should be the most important standard, not perceived impact!

The field dictates what is important, not any specific journal. In my view the internet has significantly muted the gatekeeper aspect of really any journal these days. If it is important, it will surface...somewhere, somehow...

I agree. But maybe they misspoke and meant to say they publish work that is of interest to their readership overall. This is certainly something an editor will know
