@nike endorsement Kaepernick will go down as boldest/genius marketing move of 2018. History judges people on their conviction, not views. The most revered athlete of century is Ali, not because of his skill or beliefs,,,but conviction.

      3) @nike did the math. Young affluents lean progressive (pro-Kaepernick). Nike arbitraging old red-state (low-disposable income) consumers for young blue state (growing disposable income) progressives. The shareholder driven thing to do? A: Nike just did it

@nike, $35bb revs--$15b US, $20b int'l. Majority of US consumers skew young, progressive. So, what is downside, $1-3bb? And of $20bb in biz from consumers overseas, how many think US is on right track? A: None.

In sum, @nike risked $1-3b in business to strengthen bond with $32b - $34b. They just did the math. #genius

Interesting view. Recall that Ali was an elite athlete across 3 decades, 3X champion, and motivated by God only. Collin Kaepernick has already been forgotten by professional sports and is a political figure.

Is a trade off necessary though? ‘young blue’ may be a better bet than ‘old red’ but isn’t becoming political risky for brand that currently transcends politics? Especially with how divisive issues are these days..

I’m confused about theee “young affluents” you speak of. I see many articles about millennials living in their parents basements.

My theory is that the anti-Kaepernicks were going to Under Armour anyway. This is checkmate, with Nike locking in the loyalty of some of its most valuable customers, and shedding relatively few.

I wish Pat Tillman was still here. I hope he is never forgotten. If there is a ranking of reverence for athletes he should be as near the top as anyone. If there is a scale for sacrifices made, he assuredly tips it. Pat made the ultimate sacrifice.

Also worth noting that Nike is a global company and no longer American. The market of Trump haters is many times larger than the market of Trump supporters.
